Apple apologizes for listening to Siri’s user requests by contractors, terminates their contracts, and changes to privacy policy

Apple laid off more than 300 people in the city of Cork, Ireland, who were hired as part of the Siri voice assistant performance appraisal program, reports The Guardian. Hundreds of employees across Europe who listened to Siri user requests also lost their jobs. All of them were hired by Apple contractors, but the company decided to terminate the program after a scandal with the disclosure of confidential information.

Along with this, Apple apologized for its contractors secretly listening to audio recordings of conversations of users with Siri and could gain access to confidential information.

“We understand that we did not fully comply with high ideals, and we apologize for this,” a statement on the Apple website said.

The company also announced some changes to Siri's privacy policy. Apple promises to no longer store default audio recordings of interactions with the voice assistant, but will instead use computer-generated decryption. Users will be able to choose whether they want to participate in the Siri Performance Improvement Program, subject to strict control of privacy or not. Apple will only use its employees to listen to requests, and random recordings, which were the main source of confidential information, will be deleted. Those who nevertheless agree to such conditions will be able to refuse to participate in the program at any time. The changes will take effect in the fall when a software update is released.

In late July, The Guardian announced that Apple was hiring contractors to listen to voice calls to Siri. Resentment was caused by the fact that private conversations of users became available to third parties. The company recognized that less than 1% of daily calls to the voice assistant are analyzed in order to improve the quality of its work. In early August, Apple suspended Siri's quality control program and promised to release a software update that would allow users to choose whether they would participate in a voice assistant performance app. .post-facts {margin: 20px 0 15px 0; padding: 15px 0 15px 23px; margin-bottom: 0; border-top: 1px solid #ddd; border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd; } .post-facts li {list-style: none; position: relative; } .post-facts li: after {content: ""; display: block; width: 8px; height: 8px; background-color: # 40b8f2; transform: rotate (45deg); position: absolute; left: -20px; top: 7px; } .post-facts li + li {margin-top: 4px; }
