Apple has officially confirmed the dismissal of its self-driving cars team.
The company sent a letter to the state employment development department of California, warning that it would dismiss 190 Project Titan employees in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. Staff redundancy is scheduled for April 16. Basically, it will affect engineers, 124 engineers will lose their jobs. At the same time, some groups involved in Project Titan will be transferred to other departments of the company that deal with artificial intelligence and other projects.
Note, this is not the first wave of reductions in the team involved in the project self-driving car. In 2016, Apple has already made massive cuts in this unit when it decided to abandon the idea of creating its own self-driving car, and instead focused on developing autonomous control technologies for third-party automakers. But the company faced problems in other areas. So, in the last quarter, iPhone sales slowed down, which forced Apple to reconsider the costs of pilot projects.
