Apple today unexpectedly introduced not only the new iPad Pro tablet, but also a couple of devices, namely the updated MacBook Air and Mac mini.
The new 2020 MacBook Air looks like the familiar model of the last generation of the 2019 model – all the changes are concentrated inside the case.
The main change is, of course, the “new” keyboard with a “scissor” key mechanism, which replaced the infamous “butterfly”. Recall that Apple, having suffered enough from this very “butterfly”, eventually decided to return to the good old scissor mechanism that worked well in older laptop models. Last year, a 16-inch MacBook Pro received such a keyboard, and now it's the turn of the MacBook Air. Obviously, shifting other MacBook Pro models to a scissor keyboard is a thing of the near future. Actually, with MacBook Air, Apple was even several months ahead of the forecast of well-known analyst Min-Chi Kuo.
Another pleasant surprise is the new model is cheaper compared to the previous generation: the basic configuration is estimated at $ 1000. Thus, an entrance ticket to the world of Apple mobile PCs is now $ 100 more affordable.
The screen remains the same: a True Tone display with a diagonal of 13.3 inches with an aspect ratio of 16:10 (2560×1600 pixels). The basic version is equipped with a CPU Core i3 with frequencies of 1.1-3.2 GHz, and the top version is equipped with Core i7 with frequencies of 1.2-3.8 GHz. Apple, as always, does not name the model, but according to indirect data, these are custom-made versions of the tenth generation Amber Lake-Y energy-efficient chips. Now everything indicates that the following models will already be equipped with Apple's own ARM processors.
The amount of RAM has not changed – 8 or 16 GB, but the SSDs have delivered more – 256 GB or 2 TB. Autonomy remained at the same level: up to 11 hours in the browser and up to 13 hours of watching videos. Dimensions and weight also have not changed: 304.1×212.4×16.1 (4.1 mm in the thinnest place) mm and 1.29 kg.
Sales will start today. There are three colors to choose from: steel, dark gray and gold.
Along with the MacBook Air, Apple also updated the Mac mini, but in the mini-PC there is only one change – twice as much memory. The base $ 799 configuration is now equipped with a 256 GB SSD, while the top one for $ 1,099 offers 512 GB. Otherwise, the new Mac mini is identical to its predecessor, released in November 2018. Alas, the new model did not receive a more powerful processor.
