You may have to wait even longer.
The pandemic of the coronavirus COVID-19 announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) may lead to delays in the supply of equipment for the introduction of 5G networks in Russia. According to a TelecomDaily expert, Denis Kuskov, the delay in launching the first fifth-generation networks may be even greater than previously anticipated.
5G is delayed?
Supplies of equipment for 5G and base stations may be limited due to the situation with coronavirus, the specialist is sure. In addition, an increase in the cost of equipment necessary for the successful implementation of fifth-generation networks in the country is likely.
The specialist believes that the telecom industry will suffer from the spread of coronavirus, like many other segments of the economy. The expert did not give accurate forecasts about the new dates for the introduction of 5G networks in Russia.
At the end of February, the Russian authorities prepared an updated “less ambitious” plan to launch 5G networks in the largest cities with a population of over one million. The implementation of 5G was postponed to 2024 due to difficulties in obtaining the necessary frequencies in the range used by the military.
All the leading manufacturers of Android devices have released their 5G-enabled smartphones. Apple will launch the first iPhone with 5G support in the fall of 2020. According to insider forecasts, along with the iPhone 12 with support for fifth-generation networks, Apple will release cheaper models without the ability to work in 5G networks.
