Numerous user wishes were heard – Apple added a dark mode to iOS 13. But in addition to the aesthetic component, the night theme can be of practical use. Many users are sure that the dark design saves battery power on modern iPhones with OLED displays. But is it?
Check this out by the author of the famous YouTube channel PhoneBuff. To confirm or refute the myth of the high energy efficiency of the dark mode, the blogger decided to compare the two iPhone XS Max in the test for autonomy. The main difference is that one smartphone worked with the dark mode turned on, and the light theme was activated on the other.
The testing methodology is simple: on each device using a special robotic arm, “live” usage scenarios were simulated – correspondence in iMessage, watching a video in a window on YouTube, navigating through Google Maps and watching Twitter. Each scenario lasted exactly two hours – until the full discharge of one of the smartphones.
The final result was surprising. The comparison revealed that the dark mode really saves the battery power of the iPhone. To make sure of this, you just need to look at the discharge schedule of two smartphones.
The difference in autonomy is impressive. At the time when the iPhone XS Max with a light theme was completely discharged, another 30% (!) Of the battery charge remained on a similar smartphone with a night theme turned on.
It is worth noting that all of the above is relevant only for iPhone models with OLED displays. This list includes smartphones such as iPhone X, XS, XS Max, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. Turning on the dark mode on other models, alas, will not give the desired effect.
