Experience using iPhone 11

1

Before the release of new iPhone models, there is not much time left, although Apple is likely to postpone their release due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus. But interest in last year’s smartphones of the company even after 9 months after the announcement remains quite high. This is especially true for the iPhone 11, formally the youngest model in the series, which nevertheless can give a head start in sales to the Pro versions. And it is unlikely that this will change in the next six months, so it was interesting for me to return to the iPhone 11 again, but in a longer use format. The result was this material, in which I tried to disclose those features of the model that often do not fit into the standard review. Therefore, if you are considering buying an iPhone 11, then I hope that my experience in using it will be useful to you.

Experience using iPhone 11

The smartphone occupies an interesting position in the model range of the manufacturer, and as for me it is well thought out. Apple’s marketers have worsened the iPhone 11 just enough to keep the gloss on the more expensive Pro models. At the same time, the differences between them are noticeable, but not so critical for most users: 6.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1792×828 pixels instead of OLED with a higher resolution, two main cameras instead of three, the use of aluminum in the case instead of steel. Otherwise, the characteristics are the same, including the productive Apple A13 platform and a similar level of autonomy. But there are also nuances in the iPhone 11 compared to older models, I'll talk about them later.

In use

There is nothing much to say about the design of the iPhone 11, with the front panel, the device stands out against the background of the Pro versions except for the larger frames around the display. I know that many users do not like this, as well as a large cutout on the screen. But with daily use, you stop paying attention to it very quickly. The back side, with the exception of the matte block with two cameras, is also nothing interesting, as for me, does not stand out.

Experience using iPhone 11

That's what the smartphone really likes is the size. Even in the mid-budget segment, Android devices go more than 6.5 inches diagonally, which is why the 6.1-inch iPhone 11 seems to be a rather compact solution against their background.

Experience using iPhone 11

And among all the current flagships of Apple, in terms of size, as for me, it occupies a good place between the more compact 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and the very large 11 Pro Max.

Experience using iPhone 11

Therefore, in general, the ergonomics of the smartphone is at a good level, including the location of the power and volume keys. Separately, I note the non-aging switch to silent mode, which is located on the left side. This is a simple but very effective solution when you need to quickly turn off the sound on your smartphone. It’s even strange that from other manufacturers a similar type of switching is found only in OnePlus.

Experience using iPhone 11

The body materials in the device as a whole are of high quality, for some time I used it without a cover and screen protection, having received only a few not very noticeable scratches on the glass of the case. Apple even touted the iPhone 11 as a smartphone that could survive the fall, but I haven’t tested its strength so much. Although in the end I still came to use the device in a case, it turned out to be more convenient, because the case becomes less slippery.

Experience using iPhone 11

For this, I chose a transparent polymer case from Moshi called Vitros, a very nice model that does not greatly increase the size of the smartphone and does not collect fingerprints.

Experience using iPhone 11

It was also interesting to try to stick a protective glass on the device, I know that so many iPhone owners are trying to protect the entire case from damage. And as it turned out, thin glass quite neatly rests on the case and does not affect the reaction rate of the display. In this regard, the big advantage is the use of an almost flat front panel in the iPhone 11, which, depending on the protective glass model, allows you to cover the entire or almost the display. This does not guarantee the complete safety of the matrix when it falls, but at least it helps to avoid scratches on the screen if you worry about them. In addition, under current conditions, glass also protects the display from the effects of antiseptics, which users often apply abundantly to a smartphone.

Experience using iPhone 11

The iPhone 11 case received protection from water and dust according to the IP68 standard, but on the same Apple website it is indicated that it is slightly worse than in the Pro versions. The device can be lowered to a depth of two meters for up to 30 minutes, but the older models are four meters. But in fact, this is all pretty arbitrary, because getting water into the case is not a guarantee case, so it’s better not to immerse the smartphone in water.

Display and speed

As I wrote above, the iPhone 11 uses a 6.1-inch IPS touch screen with a resolution of 1792 × 828 pixels and a pixel density of 326 per inch, just like in the first Apple Retina display. Does this mean that it is not very modern? On the one hand, this is one of the best IPS displays on the market, it has excellent color reproduction and a good margin of brightness. Apple must be given its due, they squeezed almost the maximum out of this technology. But on the other hand, its resolution does not even reach Full HD, which for the price category iPhone 11 looks very strange. This looks especially funny on YouTube, the service’s application shows the ability to switch video to 1080p, but the screen simply does not support this resolution.

Experience using iPhone 11

But I also note that if you do not have a smartphone with a higher resolution display, then you quickly get used to the screen of the iPhone 11. The "classic" for Retina 326 ppi allows you to avoid graininess, although they do not provide the sharpness of the picture, as at higher resolution.

Experience using iPhone 11

As a result, it turns out that the screen can be put forward claims in terms of a number of characteristics, but in practice its capabilities are enough for comfortable use. Although a decrease in resolution is just marketing, so that the smartphone looks a little worse against the background of Pro-models. But as we see in sales, this does not help them much.

Experience using iPhone 11

Fortunately, Apple’s marketing tricks haven’t affected its performance. The smartphone uses the flagship A13 Bionic processor and 4 GB of RAM, as in older models. Against the background of Android flagships with 8 and 12 GB, the amount of RAM in the iPhone 11 may seem very small, but thanks to good iOS optimization you won’t feel the difference in performance, the smartphone works very quickly. The only, smaller amount of RAM affects how long browser tabs and heavy applications can remain in the background, I won’t say that it directly affects the operation of the iPhone 11, but with a large amount of RAM it would be more comfortable.

Experience using iPhone 11

In general, you don’t have to complain about performance, the smartphone does an excellent job with any applications that can be downloaded from the App Store. There are no problems with games either, I actively played in NBA 2K20 (thanks to the excellent Last Dance series from Netflix) with very decent graphics, like for smartphones, and did not notice any slowdowns.

Experience using iPhone 11

In my version of the iPhone 11, 128 GB of internal memory was installed, and as for me, this is still the “golden mean” for modern smartphones. After installing all the necessary applications and games, with pulling up photos and videos from iCloud, I had more than 41 GB of memory.

Experience using iPhone 11

That is, in general, 64 GB would be enough until a certain time, but without a large margin this creates an unpleasant feeling that the memory will end soon and you will have to delete something. In this regard, 128 GB are much more comfortable. Although, of course, much depends on the usage model, 512 GB may also be missing for some users.

Experience using iPhone 11

I would also like to note the quality of communication in the iPhone 11, since during the first test there was not enough time to compare the device with models from other manufacturers. Now I can say for sure that the signal reception in the Apple smartphone is slightly weaker than in the flagships of Huawei and Samsung. Where the iPhone 11 shows one connection division, they manage to pull two or even three. Accordingly, this affects both the quality of voice transmission during a call and the data transfer speed. In a city, this is usually encountered indoors, in which the signal from the base stations of the operators breaks poorly. In other cases, the user does not feel much difference.

Experience using iPhone 11

And if I already remembered about wireless interfaces, then it is worth saying that Apple traditionally uses the latest standards. In particular, Wi-Fi 6 2 × 2 MIMO for wireless Internet connection, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 for connecting smart watches, headphones and other compatible accessories. But the NFC module in the device works only for reading, and is reserved for the Apple Pay payment system.

Operating system and applications

iPhone 11 went on sale with the iOS 13 operating system, which after 9 months managed to grow to version 13.5.1. In it, Apple added a number of new functions, in particular, a dark design mode appeared, the gallery, built-in maps, the Reminders application and much more on the little things were updated. I will not write about all the innovations, since, to be honest, I didn’t even use all of them. In particular, I didn’t have a chance to try the login through an Apple account, we still lack new information for new cards, Animoji and Memoji in the updated iMessage were also not useful, and instead of “Reminders” I used another application, which I will discuss later .

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

Of the useful innovations in iOS 13, I'll start with the updated gallery, which added a more advanced image editor. And if before that I often used Snapseed from Google, which is rarely updated, then in the end I completely switched to the built-in editor.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

On iPhone 11, I used the standard Mail app, so I liked the fact that more text formatting tools were added to it.

Experience using iPhone 11

Also, the program has the opportunity to block senders or add them to the list of ignored.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

I also note the updated application "Files", which now looks more like a classic explorer, with the ability to create folders directly in the iPhone and scan documents in them.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

Otherwise, from the standard set of programs in iOS 13, I still actively used the Safari browser, calendar, calculator, alarm clock and weather application. But for notes, I came across the cross-platform OneNote, for Microsoft 365 documents with Word and Excel, Microsoft To Do for the task list, Google Photos for synchronizing and backup photos, and Telegram and Facebook Messenger for instant messaging.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

As for iOS itself, it is still pretty easy to use, but functional mobile operating system. It does not give the user much choice in terms of customization, there are no themes and the ability to bring widgets to the main screen. However, this is often for the better, given the sometimes clutter on desktops for Android users.

Safety

IPhone 11 uses only one method of biometric authentication – the Face ID facial recognition system, which works on the basis of an infrared emitter, an infrared camera, and a point projector. At the time of the announcement, Apple announced a significant increase in scanning speed, but then it turned out that this was not even the merit of the sensors, but an improvement in iOS 13. Moreover, Face ID became faster on previous iPhone models.

Experience using iPhone 11

In general, I can only praise Apple’s face recognition system, it works well in the dark, and is also able to recognize the user even with glasses and a hat. In a world without a new coronavirus, this would still be one of the best solutions for quickly and safely unlocking a smartphone. But the need to wear medical masks and respirators completely destroys all the magic of Face ID. Moreover, when it does not work, iOS prompts the user to enter a PIN code that attackers can spy. If they eventually steal a smartphone, it will easily be unlocked. This raises many concerns about Face ID security, but its only alternative for the iPhone 11 is the same pincode.

I don’t know if Apple is thinking about using an additional fingerprint scanner on the screen in the iPhone 12, but when extending the mask mode, its appearance is very desirable. Moreover, the use of masks in the world can come into constant use, as before in some Asian countries.

Cameras and Image Processing

Compared to this year’s mid-budget models, the iPhone 11 is slightly behind in terms of the number of main cameras; there are two of them in the smartphone:

12-megapixel wide-angle with f / 1.8 aperture, 1 / 2.55 ″ sensor size, phase detection autofocus and optical stabilization; 12-megapixel ultra-wide with f / 2.4 aperture, 1 / 3.6 ″ sensor size, 120 degree viewing angle and electronic stabilization.

Experience using iPhone 11

As you can see, Apple also did not pursue a higher resolution and sensor size. In this update of the camera system, they focused on post-processing, for the first time realizing support for the “night mode”, which glues several shots taken with different parameters. This made it possible to improve photographs taken in low light, but in general, the capabilities of the wide-angle module did not go very far from the iPhone Xr. Especially when shooting in the afternoon, here, even upon closer inspection, it is difficult to find differences. Good lighting is given by the iPhone 11 quite easily, the device correctly sets the exposure, white balance and traditionally takes pictures with natural color reproduction. Detailing is generally not bad, but it already loses much to new sensors with higher resolution.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

The same applies to night photos, post-processing allows you to draw out the light, but if it is very small, then I eat up all the details. In this regard, the iPhone 11 loses to flagships with larger matrices that are able to capture more light.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

The ultra-wide-angle module in a smartphone is useful when you need to capture more scene, for example, when shooting architecture. It is slightly inferior to the main camera in detail, but in general it copes with its task. The only thing is that at night its use loses its meaning due to the lack of optical stabilization, a smaller aperture and a “night mode”.

Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11Experience using iPhone 11

In general, the iPhone 11 in terms of shooting is a good solution from the point-and-shoot series, because you almost always get a predictable result. Yes, and color reproduction is close to natural, so pictures are then easier to process by applying filters to them.

Experience using iPhone 11

As I wrote above, for editing, I mainly used the built-in tools of the updated gallery. But for the additional post-processing, I liked Afterlight and Retouch most of all, the first one has a good set of tools for adding filters, and the second one allows you to retouch the picture. Here are some examples after processing:

Separately, I note the Specter Camera application, which, using machine learning, allows you to simulate a slow shutter speed.

Here is one example of its use, the first photo is a regular shot, the second through Specter:

Audio

Of the pleasant things about the iPhone 11, I want to highlight two external speakers, they are quite loud and sound voluminous. Therefore, watching videos on YouTube or any series on Netflix is quite comfortable right from your smartphone. In this regard, Apple did not cut back on the capabilities of the model compared to older versions.

Experience using iPhone 11

To connect wired headphones to the iPhone 11, you can use the Lightning port or an adapter, which you will have to look for separately, since it is no longer included in the package. But, as for me, it makes sense for smartphone users in this price category to buy fully wireless headphones.

Experience using iPhone 11

I used several models with iPhone 11 at once, but I must admit that due to tighter integration, it is most pleasant to use AirPods, in my case it was the Pro version. Information about the headphones appears on the smartphone screen just after opening their case, and it takes just a second to connect. At the same time, the sound quality is at a good level, at least for the streaming services Apple Music and YouTube Music, which I actively use.

Experience using iPhone 11

Why two at once? In the first one, I have the main media library, and the second one is bundled with YouTube Premium and I like it better in terms of recommendations.

Autonomy and charging

The iPhone 11 has a built-in battery with a capacity of 3110 mAh, which is frankly small by the standards of the top Android smartphones. But due to the not very high screen resolution and energy-efficient platform, the smartphone manages to show good autonomy. For all the time of use, I don’t remember a single case when before the end of the day it would show less than 30%, while providing on average more than 6 hours of the active screen.

Experience using iPhone 11

But I still most often put it on charge every night. I could do this in the morning, but Apple forgot to add a quick charge unit to the kit, using a 5W power supply. Charging a smartphone from it is still a “pleasure”, because if it is dead, it will take 3.5 hours. The 18 W power supply solves the issue, but it must be purchased separately. You can also charge from the MacBook's power supply if it is with USB Type-C, but for this again you need to buy a separate cable from Type-C to Lightning. В общем всё, что касается комплектной зарядки – это боль и страдание для тех, кто в принципе знает, насколько быстро могут заряжаться современные смартфоны.

Experience using iPhone 11
