Intel employees confirm Apple’s transition to its own ARM processors on Mac computers in 2020

Every day there is more evidence that in the foreseeable future Apple will abandon Intel processors, which it has been using in mobile and desktop Mac computers since 2006, in favor of its own solutions built on the ARM architecture. And now there are new data indicating that the transition will really begin next year.

The source of this information are several developers and employees of Intel itself, who, communicating with Axios journalists on conditions of complete anonymity, confirmed that Apple intends to start switching to its own CPU next year. Thus, we can already state now that with high probability ARM processors on Mac are there!

Of course, such a transition raises concerns about the performance of future computers – whether it will be high enough, given the use of energy-efficient ARM architecture, especially in the desktop segment. But it’s obvious that the transition will be gradual (in fact, Bloomberg also mentioned this in his report) and, probably, the MacBook mobile computers are the first in line.

Speaking about the performance of potential Apple ARM chips for Mac, one can recall the recent Apple iPad Pro presentation with SoC A12X Bionic. Then Apple claimed that tablets are more powerful than 92% of all PCs sold. Later, there were performance tests in which the A12X Bionic showed record results and even outpaced the current mobile Intel Core i7.

Against the background of all this, there is already no doubt that the future Apple Macs will use Apple's own ARM chips. The question is how long this transition will take. Note that the start date of the transition (2020) will perfectly match with another initiative of Apple – the Marzipan project, which provides for the gradual merging of iOS and macOS. Just the other day it was reported that Apple in 2021 will give developers the opportunity to combine applications for the iPhone, iPad and Mac into a single application.
