Is 5G launch just around the corner? Fifth Generation Networks Tested in Russia

5G test networks are breaking speed records.
Telecommunications operator MTS and Samsung at the exhibition M.Video Electronics Show showed what fifth-generation networks are capable of. The partners deployed a dedicated 5G internal network at Crocus Expo, demonstrating to all visitors the outstanding download speeds in everyday usage scenarios – when downloading applications and watching ultra-high-definition streaming video.
For testing, a pre-sale sample of the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G was chosen. During preliminary tests, a record data transfer rate of more than 2 Gbit / s was achieved. For comparison, the maximum possible download speed in LTE networks is up to 300 Mbit / s, and LTE Advanced – up to 833 Mbit / s.
According to Oleg Muravyov, Commercial Director of M.Video-Eldorado Group, fifth-generation networks have enormous potential. In the foreseeable future, fast Internet will be necessary not only for smartphones, but also for many other devices: from game consoles to smart home gadgets, I am sure the top manager.
MTS is also showing great interest in 5G technology.
MTS is actively testing fifth-generation networks on user devices. The launch of the 5G network across the city will lead to the development of augmented reality technologies, artificial intelligence, the Internet of things and smart cities and will transfer solutions based on them from the status of pilot projects to everyday life, ”said Evgeny Lukyanchuk, Director of Development of the MTS network.
However, the full implementation of 5G networks in Russia is still a big question. The fact is that in most countries, fifth-generation networks operate in the frequency range 3.4-3.8 GHz. In Russia, these frequencies are reserved by the RF Ministry of Defense and Roscosmos.
Of course, one could use an unoccupied spectrum in the range from 4.4 to 4.99 GHz. But in this case, the organization of 5G networks will require even greater investments from network operators in network infrastructure due to the high cost of “non-standard” equipment.
