Schedule of the day: as the flagship smartphones Samsung and Apple since 2011 rose in price

Last week, folding smartphones Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X with flexible screens were presented, showing that $ 1,000 for the flagship smartphone in 2019 is far from the limit. Recall, Samsung Galaxy Fold should go on sale in April at a price of $ 1980, and Huawei Mate X – in the middle of the year for $ 2600. The authoritative American edition of Bloomberg decided to find out how over the past few years the flagship smartphones of the most famous brands have risen in price.
Journalists chose 2011 as the starting time for their comparative analysis. As for the brands, in addition to the current market leaders Samsung and Apple, Bloomberg received attention from Google and Huawei, although in the case of the Chinese manufacturer, the analysis ended on the recently introduced Huawei Mate X, while the first Pixel was released in 2016. That is, in essence, this study of how the flagships of Samsung and Apple have been going up since 2011. In general, the choice is not surprising, given that Bloomberg is an American edition, therefore, the sample is also for the US market. The results of the study can be seen in the graph below.
It is impossible not to notice that the most noticeable jump in prices occurred precisely in 2017, when the Apple iPhone X came out. After that, both Samsung and Google significantly increased the prices of their flagships. In fact, this year smartphones caught up in price with premium laptops.
Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X are the undisputed leaders in this price race, so to speak. But the price of traditional flagships also soared up compared to the previous generation. For example, the price of the iPhone Xs Max in the United States reaches $ 1,450, while the premium Galaxy S10 + at $ 1600 does not really lag behind the bendable Galaxy Fold for $ 1980. But back in 2011, the flagships of Samsung (Galaxy SII) and Apple (iPhone 4s) could be bought for $ 600 and $ 650, respectively. Interestingly, the current cheaper flagships of the Samsung Galaxy S10e and Apple iPhone Xr are only $ 100 more expensive than the same Galaxy SII and Phone 4s. Against the background of the flagships of Samsung and Apple, which have risen in price considerably this year, the Google Pixel smartphones clearly look "undervalued."
If you take the smartphone market as a whole, and not its upper segment separately, then the trend for buyers is also very disappointing – prices are rising. According to IDC, the average price for a smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2018 on the international market in annual terms increased from $ 542 to $ 575.
